Guidelines
Check our Submittable page for individual submission guidelines. Each opportunity has distinct guidelines, but here are some general rules:
-
You must be a current student at Otterbein University.
-
Your work must be your own. We do not accept AI generated work, and we do not tolerate plagiarism.
-
We allow simultaneous submissions to other journals, however, you must withdraw any active submission if it is published elsewhere before we accept it.
Genres
We accept work in a variety of forms and genres. Broadly speaking, we accept:
-
Fiction
-
Essay
-
Poetry
-
Playscripts
-
Graphic Narratives (comics)
-
Visual Art
Opportunities and Deadlines
We open submissions once per semester. Keep an eye on our Instagram and Submittable for current information.
Fall Chapbook
This annual chapbook showcases short form work. Each Fall Chapbook has its own unique theme.
Spring Magazine
This is our larger publication. We accept submissions up to 12 pages (depending on format). There is no specific theme. We want your best work!
Spring Cover Contest
Here is your opportunity to have your work featured as the cover for the Spring Magazine. Check out our archives to see what we've selected in the past.
Spring Writing Awards
In the spring, we also open submissions for our annual writing awards. These awards come with cash prizes and are selected by outside judges unaffiliated with the current Quiz & Quill staff. In addition to general awards for fiction, essay, poetry, playscripts, and graphic narratives, we also have two special endowed awards for very specific categories:
-
The Roy A. Burkhart Prize for Religious Poetry
-
The Walter Barnes Prize for Historical Fiction.
Note: you may submit a piece for publication in addition to the Spring Writing Awards. If you would like a submission to the fall chapbook considered for an award, please re-submit it in spring.
